What is BLOOP?
There is a school of thought that getting too many links within a short span of time and with similar anchors can raise red flags with Google since it may look to Google that those links have been acquired unnaturally by means of automated scripts or link building software.
A Google BLOOP (Backlink Over Optimization Penalty) is a result of some poor SEO services provided. It is called as a penalty because Google gets strict with a website if it is found doing any anti SEO activities.
These activities can include
- Aggressive link building campaign used by a SEO expert. Building too many backlinks in a very short time which Google considers excessive backlink manipulation as an attempt to artificially raise the rankings of a website. E.g new site that gets like 10 links per day, then all of a sudden gets 1000 in one day. Google considers this as aggressive link building or artificially building links.
- Using similar anchor text terms in all of the links is a big no-no. Doing this gives an impression that the website might be using spamming techniques to perform well in the search rankings.
- Using same or similar sort of IP address for websites promotion. Google takes this as special promotion activities being carried out by SEO experts rather than focusing on improving the quality of website.
It has been reported that there are 3 major kinds of penalties:
- -30 penalty
- -950 penalty
- Index Exclusion
It is reported that a -30 penalty affects the whole domain whereas a -950 penalty only affects some specific URLs for some specific keywords only.
Another kind of penalty is the Index Exclusion penalty or a complete ban. This kind of penalty is imposed by Google when a website severely violates quality guidelines of Google and indulges in black hat SEO techniques like cloaking and doorway pages. Index Exclusion penalty when imposed simply throws the site out of the Google index.
