To get the results fast, some SEO professional indulge in unethical practices which are also know Black Hat SEO techniques. Even though these practices serve as short term advantage but will hurt you badly in long term. These techniques can even result in your site being penalized or even banned from search engine. Some of these practices are:

1.  Using hidden content or using text with font size 0 which is visible to SE but not to visitors

2.  Employing Cloaking which render a different page to SEs and a different one to visitors

3. Using lightning fast javascript redirects or using 302 temporary redirect for a long time

4. Loading pages with irrelevant content (keyword stuffing) or Creating “doorway” pages just for search engines

The basic thumb rule should be to show the SEs what you are showing to website visitors

How To Check If Content & Links Are Readable By Search Engines

Monday, June 7th, 2010

One of the crucial aspects of SEO is to build content and links that are readable by search engines. We often wonder if a certain part of the content is visible to Search Engines or if links within a drop down menu are SE readable. One of the easiest ways to seeing pages the way SEs do is to check the Cache snapshot of the page.

For this, type cache:www.example.com/page1.html and then click on “Text-only Version” on the right hand side.

This will enable you to see the content and links which are accessible to search engines. This will also enable you to see when the SEs have last indexed the webpage. The down sides to this method are that it works only on indexed page and shows the past version of the webpage. You can use other tools such as seo-browser.com or download Lynx browser to see a wepage the way SEs do.

So have you made up your mind to give pay-per-click marketing a try?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

PPC is one of the most affordable advertising options available to small and large businesses. But like most advertising, you need to have a good strategy to get your money’s worth.

Normally, a lot of people running their first PPC campaign make mistakes that can quickly turn expensive.

This article will offer some basic advice about bidding and choosing keywords to help you run a smart PPC campaign.

The most important thing to know before starting your PPC campaign is how much you can afford to bid for a keyword. High traffic keywords on Google – the leading PPC providers – can cost $8.00 per click for a top ranking.

Can you afford that?

Consider this: the typical e-commerce site converts about 3% of its visitors. That means you need to bring 50 visitors to your site before you make a sale. At $8.00 per click, you’ll spend $400 dollars to generate one sale.

Also keep in mind that you usually want one of the top 3 listings for a keyword. So you’re caught in a catch-22: you want a high PPC ranking to get traffic, but the top rankings for popular words are too expensive.

The solution is to cast your net on a large scale, targeting a large number of less popular keywords. These words are usually less expensive and, taken as a group, can give you a considerable volume of traffic.

It’s common for PPC advertisers to target thousands of keywords. I’ve managed PPC campaigns for clients using over 1500 words.

The downside is that it can be difficult to manage a large number of keywords. You’ll want to track your ads, making sure your rankings haven’t dropped. Plus, you’ll want to know which keywords are sending you traffic and converting visitors into actual clients.

Many companies also outsource the management of their PPC campaigns. Most SEOs now offer PPC management services. These options cost money, but they usually pay and justify for themselves by running your campaigns very efficiently.

Build Links to Rank High – SEO Rank

Monday, June 7th, 2010

An effective link building service knows that back links from relevant, similarly themed websites are paramount to a high search engine ranking. Unfortunately, many online marketers fail to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to pursuing links. The first consideration you have to make in your link-building efforts is who should be linking to your website and whom you should link to. The quantity, quality, and relevance of back links will go a long way towards getting your website a top search engine ranking.

Link popularity is the single most important objective parameter used by search engines to assess the significance and value of your website. Most search engines have an inbound links database and most of them allow you to view your sites inbound links list with the help of special language operators. The databases from various search engines are mainly similar to each other, but each one will have some unique information on link popularity not present in the others.

Link popularity is by far one of the most decisive factors to improve search engine ranking of a website in major search engines. Relevant and organic back links will significantly increase your website’s link popularity, improve PageRank, and ultimately bring in a substantial amount of direct traffic to your website.

Methods To Outrank Undesirable Listings

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Online Reputation Management refers to monitoring, working on and mitigating the negative results for a particular search query on Search Engines. If there is a website, Blog or a forum which speaks negatively about your product or service, you may want to remove that undesirable listing from search results. While some of these may be genuine, most of these negative reviews are overhyped or sometime, work of your competitors.  While we don’t have any control on sites publishing negative content, we can certainly outrank them with other favorable listings. Some of the methods to outrank undesirable listings

# Creating profile on sites such as Wikipedia and optimizing Social Media profile

# Registering the domain names similar to the query (.com, .net & .org) and building websites around them

# Posting positive reviews on prominent forums and review websites

#  Posting a video or podcast

Search Engines Follow Latent Semantic Indexing Technique For Rankings

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is a technique through which search engines try to figure out phrase relationships when processing queries and consider webpages that have many words semantically close to queried phrase. Pages that are focused on a wider net of semantically related keywords tend to have higher rankings for the core keyword. For e.g. a document mentioning SEO should also include terms such as SEM, website optimization, search engine promotion, content optimization, website promotion etc. This improves relevancy score and in turn, rankings. Pages that are too much focused on one phrase tend to be filtered out and rank low.

Effect of Mayday Update on Website Rankings

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Search Engines make minor updates to their search algorithms quite frequently. Google alone made about 500 updates to its algorithms last year. Most of these updates have trivial effect on search results and go unnoticed but a few are substantial enough to have a significant impact on rankings. One such update happened on 1st May this year which is more popularly known as Mayday Update. The two main effects it had on websites were:

1. Many big websites lost their rankings for Long Tail keywords (keywords with low competition and low search count). These rankings were redirected to websites with higher quality score.

2. Due to the result of above mentioned point, many sites lost 15-20% of their traffic.

So if your website sees a dip in traffic in the month of May, don’t panic and look for the symptoms thoroughly before finding a cure. Check your Web Analytics reports and see if there is a major change in long list of keywords bringing in little but valuable traffic to your website. Has the total number of keywords deriving organic traffic decreased significantly? The dip in traffic could be seasonal and perfectly normal phenomena.

Pls note that this update should not be confused with Google Caffeine update which will be discussed in our future post.

How Images Can Bring Search Engine Traffic

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Images are one of the most important elements of the site. Like the webpages, they can also be linked to and can bring search engine traffic through Image Search results. To find the websites which are linking to images on your website, type “imagesite:www.example.com -site:www.example.com” in the Google Image Search. This operator is helpful in finding the image optimization opportunities (and occasionally, finding websites copying your content).
