Social Bookmarking websites attract a considerable amount of user attention and are still a significant part of any organic SEO campaign. Most of these websites use No Follow attribute so as not to pass link juice to websites that they don’t trust. But here search engines are not the entire limit of the world, there are users also who are looking for information on the web and you can fetch direct traffic to your website through these no follow links even if you don’t get Google traffic.

To exclude content on the website, many webmasters either use robots.txt file or Robots Meta tag. But there is some difference in way both of this work.
* Block with Robots.txt – This means that you are telling search engines not to attempt to visit the URL, but feel free to keep it in the index & display in the SERPs. Such URL will often show up in search results without page title and snippe
* Block with Meta No Index – It’s like telling search engines to feel free to visit, but don’t put the URL in the index or display in the results.
* Block by No following Links – not a smart move, as other followed links can still put them in the index.

Google has an Advanced location options which apply only to ads shown on the Google Search Network. Options include targeting users by their physical location, by search intent, or both. You can also exclude certain locations, either by physical location only, or by physical location and search intent. Search intent refers to location-specific terms in users’ search queries, such as “san francisco bakery.” Generally, the default settings are appropriate for the majority of advertisers. But in case you ship your product only to a limited geographical region, Or you are sure that customer outside a particular area is less likely to convert, you can disable the targeting using search intent. This will allow you to bring down the PPC cost although it may reduce the impressions as well.

PPC campaign for local businesses can be a bit different from the other larger businesses. For most local businesses, especially to start, I recommend using a geo-modified keyword campaign and then moving into setting up another campaign which is more of a keyword driven campaign rather than a geographically driven campaign (from a keyword standpoint). This is because starting out with a huge AdWords campaign can be overwhelming to a new user, which can lead to poor management and a poor account quality score right off the bat.

Internal links of a website is one of the most neglected aspects of SEO in many cases. Although inbound links do not carry same value as by external links, they are important to help search engines understand site architecture, internal flow of PR, indexing of more pages and leverage the use of anchor text within a website. It also improves user experience and leads to more page views on the website. Websites such as Wikipedia are using hundreds of internal links to their own advantage. Also, search engines do not differentiate between internal absolute or relative links.

When starting a keyword research, a list of raw keywords must be created. While you can think and jot down a few keywords of your own, Search engines can provide some extra keyword suggestions to build up a list of raw keywords. All major search engines provide suggestions while you type in the keyword. With the advent of Google Instant and Yahoo Search Direct, this option has been enhanced quite a bit. Also all major search engines provide Related Searches keyword suggestions. In Google, this can be found under, “More Search Tools” option. In Yahoo and Bing, these are visible at the top or side bar respectively. Google also has a Wonder Wheel option along option under “More Search Tools” which is quite helpful in finding interrelated keywords and new keyword groups.

AdWord provides an option to check the number of clicks and impressions you are getting from a certain kind of device. You can check this under Segments sections and then selecting Devices. In case you are seeing some more than 10-20% of your clicks coming from mobile devices, it would be better to create a separate campaign only for mobile devices and disable them from existing campaigns. The queries for mobile devices are shorter and you can use fast loading, lighter pages as landing pages. The searcher’s attention span is limited, so make mobile specific ad copy short and nice.

Google and other Search Engines often pull out a business’s local listings from third party directories and reviews websites such as Yelp and Insiderpages etc. Most of the times these listings will be incomplete, non-optimized and having some obsolete information. In case you encounter any such listing of your business, you can claim it to be yours. All you will have to do is click on “More Info” or “Places Page” link which will open the Google Places page. Now you can click on the “Business Owner?” link on the top right hand side. Login using your Google account and choose “Edit my Business Information”. A postcard will be sent to the physical address containing verification Pin which can be used to activate the listing. Many third party review websites also provide options to claim the listings.

While optimizing a Google Places local account listing (or Yahoo or Bing local listing), always refrain yourself from putting the keywords in your Business name as it could lead to your account being suspended. Use the keywords judiciously in Description and Additional information section; and up to some extent in categories where you can create 1-2 custom categories, containing keyword, out of five options available.

Google Adwords provides a feature to all advertisers called Automated Rules to manage PPC campaigns more easily. Automated Rules lets you schedule automatic adjustments to your AdWords account based on criteria that you specify. You’re able to create rules to automate bid, budget, and status changes on a specific part of your account (selected keywords, ad groups, campaigns, and ads) that are triggered at a particular time.
- Change Budget on day of week when highest sales are expected
- Increase or decrease the max. CPC based upon CTR or conversion rate
- Changing ad text just a day before promotion goes live
The changes can be at campaign level, ad group level, keyword level or ad text level. We will be discussing automated rules in more detail in our future posts.
