Today’s popular #hashtag is represented by a Pound Sign, which almost all of us may remember from our childhood Tic-Tac game. The hashtag used today on social media began its journey way back in the 1980’s on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), where they used to categorize items such as Messages, Images, Videos, and other content and make it easier for users to search for specific content.
