Today’s popular #hashtag is represented by a Pound Sign, which almost all of us may remember from our childhood Tic-Tac game. The hashtag used today on social media began its journey way back in the 1980’s on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), where they used to categorize items such as Messages, Images, Videos, and other content and make it easier for users to search for specific content.

How do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?”
After this tweet, Twitter never looked back and hashtags changed the way Social Media worked with other Social Media Sites quickly embracing it's use. Hashtags are now widely used on almost all Social Media Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Google Plus, and YouTube. Hashtags make it helpful for users to track subjects and conversations on Social Media.
Today hashtags are used as part of Social Media Marketing Strategies, where social media promoters actively tag their posts using the hashtag to keep their content accessible to visitors. Hashtags are a powerful tool to help attain social media objectives, such as the following:
- Brand Awareness and Promotion
- Service and Product Promotion
- Community Building and Engagement
- Lead Generation and Sales
- Reputation Management
