Tips from our Experts
Here are some simple yet powerful tips from our experts that can help you gain more from your online presence. Try them out...
Web Development:
How to minimize exposing your email ID to spammers:
- Instead of using common email IDs like sales@mydomain.com or info@mydomain.com, you could use non-intuitive email addresses like sales.mgr@mydomain.com or info.mgr@mydomain.com. This will prevent spammers from guessing your email IDs.
- Don't make the life of spammers easy by activating a 'catchall' email account, which allows emails sent to anyname@mydomain.com delivered to your inbox. Keep it de-activated.
- Embed CAPTCHA images in your online forms to ensure only humans are filling them.
- Encrypt your email address listed online using JavaScript as encrypted email addresses are harder for the spammers to scrape.
- Display your email address as an image on your website so that only humans can see it and type them in their email client.
Design:
Pop-ups are mostly used to present additional information, ads and other 'non-core' material to visitors. However, unless used properly, automatic JavaScript pop-up windows are the biggest turn-offs for any website. Pop-ups increase the bounce rate of your website. |
SEO: Avoid using subdomains unless absolutely necessary as search engines often treat them as a separate domain and limit the pass-through of the trust value of your main site to it. |
Link Building: Don't underestimate the power of even low PR websites directing traffic to your website over time. The website with a PR2 today could be tomorrow's PR5 site, and vice versa. Analyze the website for content relevance and features to predict its future performance to make any decision. Also keep in mind that PR data is updated every 6 months so what you see it today may not be the site’s true PR value. |
PPC: Key to a successful PPC campaign is to create a sense of urgency by using phrases like "limited time," "offer ends soon," "today only," and "the first 50 visitors." If the visitors know that your offer is limited and will end soon, there are more chances of them clicking on your ad.
Article Syndication:
There are many search engines, Google in particular, that frown on mirror sites or duplicate content. If Google finds that a site is a mirror of another (have resembling content), it tends to devalue the mirror site. The problem is that Google may not be able to decide, which site is original, so you may get your main site devalued. You should take special care to keep your articles content as original as possible and discourage your affiliates from copying your site’s content. You might want to use tools like Article
Checker to check the resemblance of your content. |
Website Usability: Reasons for not using background music on your site:
- Using background music in websites was considered a hit in the mid 90's, but not anymore. Such a practice now might make your website look amateurish, tacky and unprofessional.
- Not every one has the same music taste.
- It slows the site download and is a waste of bandwidth for your server (& money that you pay for that extra bandwidth) as well as the user.
- Not every browser & operating system may support your multimedia format.

Q: Since Google has started imposing penalties on paid links, I am afraid that buying links now can negatively impact my website. Is my fear justified? – Tina Wolf
Ans: Google’s recent action to penalize paid links has been on the cards for quite a while. They realize that this is the only way it can restrict webmasters from gaming the system. While blatant link buying from spammy websites that list tons of links from link pages is a certain risk, there are creative ways you can not only be safe for search engines but get amply rewarded. Search engines are now increasingly leaning towards rewarding links from relevant articles and content pages rather than links from 'links' pages. You should try and locate sites which list your industry-relevant articles and try and secure links from such pages. Ensure that such pages do not have too many outgoing links from the page otherwise, such pages may also appear spammy.

Featured Case study – Search Engine Marketing
http://www.hatcountry.com
Overview: Hatcountry.com is a one-stop-shop for all western wear essentials. They carry one of the largest selections of western hats around, including Bailey, Stetson, Resistol and Renegade and also carry a vast selection of outdoorsman hats. Hatcountry has great deals on an unmatched selection of Fur Cowboy Hats, Wool Felt Cowboy Hats, and Straw Cowboy Hats in a variety of colors and finishes.
Challenges: Initially, Hatcountry.com had dynamic pages with very little content. It was difficult for search engines to index the pages that led to no rankings. There was very little link-back support, and a low PageRank. Also, the keywords to be optimized were mostly the products names and therefore very competitive. Hatcountry.com was also spending a lot of resources on expensive alternatives like pay per click, which was driving in the traffic, but a high cost. This was not a sustainable long-term marketing option for them.
Solution: We started out by creating additional content for the website by writing industry related articles, with competitive keywords. This helped the website have static pages, which the search engines could index easily. We also optimized the already existing dynamic pages. We then recommended a link-building campaign for highly competitive keywords. We also increased the search engine saturation of the website by extensive interlinking. All our efforts have resulted in Hatcountry.com having the top rankings for competitive keywords like "cowboy hats".
Following rankings have been achieved for the keywords - Cowboy hats, Cowboy Aussie Hats, Australian hats & Western Hats:
